The Custom Metal Fabrication Prototype Process

by | May 12, 2022 | Insights

Some custom metal manufacturers see themselves as just a basic fulfillment partner. You provide the plans and do all the design work, and they’ll slap the product together for you.

While you certainly end up with … something at the end of that process, it’s rarely as good as it could be. At times, it’s even a downright disappointment.

Here at Jones Metal Inc., we serve you as a holistic custom metal manufacturing partner. To understand how much better our approach is for you as a customer, let’s take a look at how we develop a custom metal fabrication prototype.

STAGE 1: DETERMINING THE NEEDS OF THE CUSTOMER

We work with projects at every stage of design, from the early concept phases to fully developed files all packaged up and ready to go. So, our first stage when developing a new prototype is usually determining where the project currently stands.

We’ll use information gathered from the initial request for a custom quote as well as follow-up conversations to identify opportunities for refinement. Depending on the needs of the client, this refinement stage may look like:

  • Developing one or more designs from scratch.
  • Modifying the client’s existing design.
  • Optimizing the design for Jones Metal manufacturing processes.

Only once the client is completely satisfied with the design files does the physical prototyping begin.

STAGE 2: CREATING THE PROTOTYPE

Quick point of pride: Many of our seasoned clients don’t even request a prototype anymore – they trust that we’ll execute the design well right off the bat. That’s the kind of compliment we love to get, and a sign of the consistent quality of our work!

When a prototype is desired, either from new clients or for a particularly challenging new project, the process is collaborative. Our engineers work closely with clients. This means that, even if the first prototype isn’t 100% perfect, clear communication and documentation ensures a subsequent iteration will be.

STAGE 3: FROM PROTOTYPE TO FINAL PRODUCT

After our engineers have gotten sign off from the client, we’ll begin manufacturing the final product following the precise specifications set out in the prototype design. This is the stage where our efforts to develop an optimized process pay off.

Every part of manufacturing – from the materials and machines used to the sequence of machining and assembly steps – is planned with timeliness, cost efficiency and precision in mind. All to ensure our clients receive the best possible product in the end.

JONES METAL: WHAT TRUE PARTNERSHIP LOOKS LIKE

When you work with us, you never have to worry about quality.

Our in-house engineering and quality management team identifies opportunities and risks throughout the prototyping process. We keep in close communication at every stage. We take client feedback seriously. And once you hold a Jones Metal prototype in your hands, the quality and dedication to craftsmanship are things you can really feel.
